US Withdraws All Bombers From UK Base After New Security Threat
The United States has withdrawn all of its bombers from RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom and returned the aircraft to their home stations in the US following a new security threat, according to the Pentagon.
The move comes days after British authorities arrested several people in connection with an alleged terrorist plot near the Gloucestershire airbase, which has been used by the US military for bomber operations against Iran.
A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that all US bombers deployed at RAF Fairford had returned to their home stations. The department did not provide details about the specific threat that prompted the redeployment.
RAF Fairford Was Used for US Bomber Operations
RAF Fairford is a UK military base that has served as an important operating location for US long-range bombers.
The base has hosted B-1 aircraft and has also supported other US bomber deployments. The aircraft have been involved in operations connected to the conflict with Iran.
The sudden withdrawal is notable because the aircraft were sent back to the United States rather than simply being moved to another overseas base. Pentagon officials said operational security prevented them from providing real-time details about the movement.
Arrests Near the Airbase
The withdrawal follows a security incident near RAF Fairford on September 27.
British counterterrorism police arrested five British men in their 20s after suspicious vehicles were reported near the base. Police investigated the men on suspicion of explosives offenses and preparation of a terrorist act.
A sixth suspect, a British-Iranian dual national, was arrested later in London in connection with the investigation.
The suspects have since been released on bail as the investigation continues. British authorities have said no explosives were found, although investigators examined material and fuel discovered in vehicles near the base.
Possible Iran Connection Under Investigation
British officials have been investigating whether Iran was connected to the alleged plot.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran had played a role in the incident. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also said investigators believe a foreign actor may have been involved.
However, no final finding establishing Iranian responsibility has been publicly announced.
Iran has denied involvement and rejected the allegations as unfounded. Tehran has also protested to the British government over the accusations.
The investigation is therefore continuing, with authorities examining possible links to Iran as well as other potential explanations.
Why the Bomber Withdrawal Matters
The decision to remove the aircraft highlights the security concerns surrounding RAF Fairford.
The base has become strategically important because of its role in supporting US military operations. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously warned that British bases used to support attacks on Iranian territory could become targets.
The latest withdrawal does not mean the US has ended its bomber operations or reduced its overall global strike capability. The Pentagon said American bombers routinely operate from different locations around the world depending on operational requirements and force-readiness needs.
UK and US Continue to Investigate
The British Ministry of Defence has not provided a detailed public explanation for the US decision to withdraw the aircraft.
The US move comes as British and American authorities continue investigating the suspected plot and assessing security at military facilities.
Other US military installations in Britain have also faced heightened security concerns amid the wider conflict with Iran.
For now, the exact nature of the new threat that triggered the bomber withdrawal has not been publicly disclosed. Authorities are continuing to investigate the alleged plot, its possible links and whether any wider threat to US or British military facilities exists.
