In his quest for the US presidency, Donald Trump suggests automatic Green Cards for Indian graduates: Allow us to import
Former US President Donald Trump has loosened his stance on immigration and proposed "automatic Green Cards" for foreign graduates of US institutions in front of the 2024 US presidential election. In a podcast interview, Trump emphasized the need of keeping talented people in the United States and stated that he supported awarding Green Cards in conjunction with degrees. He emphasized the economic potential wasted when highly educated people launch enterprises that may succeed in the US but instead return to their home nations, like China and India.
"What I want to do, and what I will do, is—if you graduate from college, I believe that your diploma should automatically include a Green Card, which you need in order to be allowed to remain in this country. In the "All-In" podcast, 78-year-old Trump stated, "And that includes junior colleges too."
Calacanis asked that Donald Trump "promise us you will give us more ability to import the best and brightest around the world to America." To which Trump replied with these statements.
Donald Trump also lamented "tales of people who graduated from a college or a prestigious university and were determined to stay here." They went back to China or India and conducted the same fundamental business there after failing to implement their company idea or strategy.
"...and they become multi-billionaires employing thousands and thousands of people, and it could have been done here," he stated.
“Let me simply say that losing students from the best universities, like Harvard and MIT, makes me very sad. and less well-known but equally excellent schools. And that's what I would have done, too, but we had to deal with the COVID issue because it arose and, as you may recall, sort of took center stage for a bit," Trump retorted."
Trump's comments show a shift from his earlier anti-immigrant rhetoric, emphasizing the need for a merit-based immigration system to draw and keep competent workers. He brought attention to the predicament of elite graduates who, in spite of their academic accomplishments and prospective economic contributions, find it difficult to get US residence.
Donald Trump enacted tight immigration laws during his administration with the intention of lowering legal immigration. Applications for green cards and visas were restricted by these rules. He also attacked the H-1B visa program, which is essential for IT businesses to hire qualified foreign workers, claiming it is harmful to American interests.
Granting automatic Green Cards to graduates in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math) aligns with Donald Trump's renewed emphasis on luring and retaining exceptional talent.
Trump's plans stand in sharp contrast to previous executive measures, such the travel ban aimed at nations with a high concentration of Muslims and the attempts to restrict legal immigration.
Trump's immigration policies are nonetheless divisive despite these changes, with discussions over how they will affect the US labor market and economy continuing.
